Obtaining a Nepalese Tourist Visa

A Nepalese visa is mandatory for all tourists. You can obtain it in one of two ways:

  • Before departure – at a Nepalese embassy or consulate in your home country.

  • Upon arrival – at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

The processing time is up to 15 days, and the visa is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

Important: You must first start your visa application online via the official Nepal Ministry of Immigration website.

It is strongly recommended to have an assistance contract or insurance covering all medical expenses—including surgery, hospitalization, and medical repatriation. Without such coverage, access to care may be restricted, even in life-threatening situations.

🧭 1. Comprehensive Travel Insurance

Covers general trip-related risks:

  • Trip cancellation (illness, unforeseen events)

  • Trip interruption (early return, family emergencies)

  • Delay or loss of luggage

  • Civil liability abroad (damage caused to others)

⛰️ 2. Health and Repatriation Insurance

Essential for Nepal, where medical facilities outside Kathmandu are limited:

  • Medical and hospitalization expenses (often require upfront payment)

  • Medical repatriation (transfer to home country in case of serious illness/accident)

  • 24/7 assistance to coordinate care and evacuation

💡 Make sure Nepal is included in the coverage area of your insurance or credit card.

🚁 3. Trekking and High-Altitude Insurance

Needed for treks above 3,000–4,000 m:

  • Mountain search and rescue (including helicopter) – required for TIMS permits

  • Helicopter evacuation to Kathmandu or Pokhara

  • Altitude coverage: check limits; some policies stop at 3,000–4,000 m

Recommended companies : Chapka, AVI International, ACS, Europ Assistance, Allianz Travel.

💡 4. Practical Tips

  • Keep paper and digital copies of your insurance contract and emergency contacts

  • Call the international assistance number before hospitalization
