Observe rare and iconic river inhabitants, now threatened and found only in certain South Asian rivers: massive mugger crocodiles and slender-snouted gharials basking in the sun along sandy banks.

Along the banks of the Karnali, fishermen’s boats glide quietly across the water. Nearby, groups of children swim freely, seemingly unbothered by the silent presence of crocodiles sharing these waters.

Preparation and Departure 🥾

Depart early in the morning from the lodge in a comfortable 4x4. After approximately two hours, we reach the Karnali River and continue onward to the Mohana.

Morning 🐬

Observe Ganges dolphins in a narrow branch of the river (the Mohana), alongside adult and juvenile crocodiles in their natural habitat.

Lunch 🍴

Enjoy a pleasant lunch at a small local restaurant near the bridge over the Karnali River. This is a chance to savor simple, authentic cuisine in a setting open to nature.

Afternoon

Explore the banks of the Karnali River. In winter, you may spot Sohana gold seekers, often accompanied by their families, patiently sifting through the sand.

Return & Final Discoveries 🚙

Return to the lodge at the end of the day, soaking in the sunset over the river and reflecting on a day immersed in the wild.

Observation of these remarkable aquatic mammals begins at dawn, offering the chance to witness their playful morning activities in their natural habitat.

Completely blind, they navigate using vibrations and sounds in their environment. Their long, tooth-filled rostrum resembles that of the gharial — a slender-snouted crocodile and a discreet resident of the same waters.

Along the river, you might spot iconic crocodiles — slender gharials and massive muggers — basking in the sun on the banks. This unique moment also offers a chance to observe a variety of birds, gliding above the water or perched along the tranquil shores.
